Description:
Clumping sedge that grows in moist to dry conditions in deciduous woodlands, woodland edges, meadows and other partially shaded habitats. Dense, upright clumps of narrow, grass-like leaves typically grow 1-3 ft. tall. Small greenish flower spikes emerge on slender stems in late spring to early summer, followed by attractive seedheads that mature from green to brown. Prefers partial shade and moist, well-drained soils, but can tolerate drier conditions once established. Swan’s Sedge is a good choice for naturalized areas, woodland gardens, shady borders and native plantings. Its clumping growth habit can provide ground-level cover while its deep roots help stabilize soil.
Wildlife Value: Host plant for the larvae of leaf-mining moths including Elachista argentosa and Elachista madarella. The seeds are eaten by a variety of birds, including Wild Turkey, Northern Bobwhite, immature Ruffed Grouse, Northern Cardinal, Eastern Towhee and several species of sparrows. Seeds are also eaten by Fox Squirrels and Gray Squirrels. The foliage and dense clumps provide habitat and cover for numerous insects and other small wildlife.
